Whole Person: Supporting the whole person means carefully examining all of the factors that contribute to a person’s experience of their life - physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, environmental, and societal. An Integrative Health approach to this concept recognizes that all of these elements are interconnected, just as every person’s experience is interconnected with the health and well-being of all people and of our beautiful planet. Integrative Health moves from “What’s Wrong with You?” to “What Matters to You?”. while Trauma-Informed Care ask “What Happened to You?”. The Art of Wellness blends these foundational questions to create personalized, meaningful, and trauma informed wellness programming.
Cultural Humility: The Art of Wellness strives to approach each client, organization, and community with the utmost understanding, respect, and appreciation for their historical and cultural backgrounds. This involves deep listening and continuous appraisal on how systems of oppression (white supremacy, patriarchy, ableism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination) impact health equity and relationship dynamics. In action this involves engagement in listening sessions prior to wellness interventions, personalized goal setting, respect for cultural origins of interventions, understanding of personal implicit bias, and extensive training in Trauma Informed Care and Health Equity. Please see IM4US’s Statement on Cultural Appropriation in Integrative Health for more information and context on this work.
